When production of the series was about to begin, David Ackroyd who created the role of Gary Ewing, on its parent show, Dallas (1978), was unavailable for the role. Ted Shackelford replaced Ackroyd, and he made his first appearance on the "Dallas" episode Dallas: Return Engagements (1979). This led to the spin-off series.
