Adam Sandler asked Jack Nicholson (who was briefly considered for the lead role in this film), to play Sid as compensation for him taking over the role of Sonny Koufax. Nicholson was flattered but ultimately declined because he took a four year acting hiatus after winning an Oscar for Qualcosa è cambiato (1997). Sandler then asked Dustin Hoffman who was also interested but was too busy with other projects so Geoffrey Horne ultimately played the role. Sandler would however go on to star later in films with both Nicholson and Hoffman.
