Director Cate Shortland based the character of Mason, played by O-T Fagbenle, on veteran and military advisor Major Merlin Hanbury-Tenison. She was so struck by his experiences working under-cover in Afghanistan that she had him coach OT directly on his role so that the actor could truly channel the gritty realities of the character.
