While the events of the movie are obviously fictional, the real life East India Trading Company did possess its own naval forces, and did participate in joint anti-piracy operations with the British Royal Navy. One in particular was the attack and capture of the pirate island stronghold of Gheria in 1756 by Rear Admiral Charles Watson.
