According to co-star Diane McBain, when filming began in September of 1968, Goldie Hawn was dating her future husband, director Gus Trikonis, a former dancer who had appeared in West Side Story on Broadway in 1957 as an understudy, and then in the 1961 film as Indio, a gang member in the Sharks. Although Hawn had gained popularity early that same year on Laugh-In (1967), she was still a rising star, so she sought the role that was ultimately to go to Claire Polan. McBain said Goldie did not stand a chance of getting that role, because Polan was the wife of leading man Ross Hagen, who was also the film's producer.
