The first four seasons were filmed on standard definition video. Russell T. Davies insisted to keep using that format so long as he was involved in the show. This was because he had a terrible experience filming Torchwood (2006) on high definition video, as there was lack of time, money and training. He also reasoned that the TARDIS set would have needed to be rebuilt in order to remove the flaws that would've become obvious in the high definition format.
