Billy Madison was being developed around the same time Tommy Boy (1995) was. The original working title of Tommy Boy was "Billy the Third: A Mid-western". But, since this was shot just mere months before 'Tommy' and was going to be released a month before 'Tommy', Lorne Michaels (who produced "Tommy Boy") insisted that the name be changed to avoid confusion.
