J.R.R. Tolkien was especially influenced by Norse mythology when he named the Dwarves. In the literal work "Gylfaginning", which is dated to circa 1220 A.D., many character names that are featured in The Lord of the Rings franchise, are named. The following names were Dwarves in Norse mythology: Dvalinn, BÃfurr, Báfurr, Bömburr, Nóri, Óri, Óinn, Gandalfr, FÃli, KÃli, Glóinn, Dóri, Þorinn (pronounced as Thorin). Even Gandalf (Gandalfr) is named after a Dwarf from Norse mythology.
