The Series 3 episode L'ispettore Gently: Gently Evil (2010) is clearly based on the real-life case of Mary Bell, an 11-year-old girl who, in 1968, strangled two 3-year-old boys, whom she was babysitting, in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and was convicted of manslaughter, serving twelve years in prison before being released in 1980. She has lived under a protected identity and in anonymity since release.
