Whenever Maynard hears the word "work", this startles him and he responds by saying "work!" in a frightened high-pitched voice, while jumping slightly. Even when Maynard says "work" within a normal sentence himself, this startles him and he repeats the word in the frightened manner. This running gag was first heard in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: Put Your Feet in Our Hands (1960). Another 'Maynard-ism' happens when someone says anything that relates to lack of motivation, unsightly personal appearance, less-than-ideal hygiene, and the like, and Maynard suddenly appears, with the line, "You rang?"
