The movie was supposed be directed by Peter Bogdanovich and star Cybill Shepherd, his girlfriend at the time. Steve McQueen screened Bogdanovich's soon-to-be released L'ultimo spettacolo (1971) and loved it and a deal was made. However, Warner Brothers approached Bogdanovich with an offer to direct Ma papà ti manda sola? (1972), with the stipulation that he had to start right away. The director wanted to do both, and the studio refused. When Steve McQueen found out, he was upset and told Bogdanovich that he was going to get someone else to direct. Interestingly, the famous funny car chase in "What's Up Doc?" is a spoof of the chase Steve McQueen did in "Bullitt"(1968).
