The only similarities from Vikram (1986) in this incarnation of Vikram are the following: Haasan's titular character (Arun Kumar Vikram) is reprised, but there are no mention of the events from the 1986 film. At the Intermission point of the film, the character played by Vijay Sethupathi is shown wearing a partially broken sunglasses. This is likely a nod to an Antagonist of 1986 "Vikram", Actor Sathyaraj. Composer Anirudh Ravichander samples a section from the 1986 title track ("Vikram Vikram", originally composed by Ilaiyaraaja ) for creating a brand new song (Vikram title track) for this film. Towards the climatic portions of the film, as Santhanam (Vijay Sethupathi) nears his death, Agent Vikram (Kamal Haasan) recites the opening lyrics of the "Vikram Vikram" before escaping. Both films were produced by Haasan under his banner, Raajkamal Films International.
