Thirty-one years after this movie's theatrical release, Max von Sydow had the small role of Lor San Tekka in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015). The novel was speculated to be an influence behind the Star Wars saga. Four years earlier, Von Sydow played Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon (1980), and Star Wars creator George Lucas revealed that the 1936 black-and-white serial of Flash Gordon starring Buster Crabbe was one of his influences behind the movies. George Lucas never acknowledged that he read or was inspired by Dune.
