Thórir's funeral is based on Ibn Fadlan's tenth-century account of a Rus funeral. In particular, the words of Kormlöth are nearly verbatim the words of the servant girl who is killed to accompany her master in Ibn Fadlan's account.A fictional version of Ibn Fadlan's experiences among the Rus appears in Il 13º guerriero (1999).
