In early drafts of the script, after Rachel Scott reveals her faith, Dylan Klebold says to Eric Harris, "Know where I would be if I tried to 'be real with everyone about 'who I am?' Tied to a fence about 120 miles north of here with my brains bashed in!" It's a reference to the murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. Klebold is implying that he is gay, like Shepard was. The line was removed after the June 2016 mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
