Every episode featured the end titles credit "Produced in association with Ed Friendly". Friendly was a Hollywood producer who owned the televison production rights to the "Little House" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. When Michael Landon and NBC were looking for ideas for his next project (as Bonanza was coming to an end) he too wanted to develop the Little House books into a series and he and Friendly began to work together developing the project for NBC. However, the two men clashed almost immediately as Friendly was insistent that any series remained realistic and faithful to the books (including the appearances of the characters, meaning among other things, a heavily bearded "Charles Ingalls"). Landon, on the other hand, wanted a starring-vehicle for himself and saw the books as just a starting point for a series that he knew he would have to fictionalise in order to make work as a long-runnng, successful TV drama. As neither men were willing to compromise, it was Landon's star-power that eventually and unsurprisingly won out and NBC paid Friendly off to drop out of the project leaving Landon to assume full creative control. However, as part of the deal,NBC, reluctantly agreed to Friendly receiving the end credit "Produced in Association with..." for the entire series (including the pilot and TV movie specials) despite having no creative involvement whatsoever with the show.
