The movie was originally rated G ("Suitable For General Audiences") by the MPAA, which George Lucas feared would be a kiss of death as it would brand it as merely for children. Twentieth Century Fox arranged a second screening for the MPAA ratings board in front of a preview audience. A child screamed and burst into tears watching the scene where Darth Vader kills Captain Antilles. The ratings board agreed to a PG rating.
