Throughout season two, there are frequent mentions of The Punisher and rival gangs turning New York City into a war zone. "The Punisher: War Zone" was a spin-off comic featuring the Punisher that had 3 separate runs with the first longest one lasting from 1992-1995. "War Zone" was also the subtitle of the movie Punisher - Zona di guerra (2008), which was also the same year the Marvel Cinematic Universe started with Iron Man (2008).
