In researching his role, actor Richard Gere spent considerable time with manic-depressive patients from the Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hospital. He was amazed by their sensitivity and insight. He said: "They're incredibly bright people and it was scary the way they could play a room of five to seven people and be hitting these emotional buttons on everyone."
