Originally Darth Vader was to appear only in this film but due to his popularity and the film being a huge success leading to the sequels Vader returned for L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980) and Il ritorno dello Jedi (1983). In fact, Vader was never originally intended to be the father of Luke and that he actually did murder his father, rather than the truth being unveiled in the next two films.
