The racist gang depicted in the film was based on a white supremacist organization called The Order. The name of the gang was taken from a fictional white supremacist organization with the same name in an infamous novel written by the late white supremacist William Pierce called The Turner Diaries (which was used as a blueprint for many hate crimes including the Oklahoma City bombing). The Order was headed by Robert Matthews, a white supremacist who had ties to various hate groups like the National Alliance and Aryan Nations (pools he recruited from to form his organization). They were involved in bank robberies and counterfeiting. The most notable crime The Order was known for was the murder of controversial radio talk show host Alan Berg in 1984. The Order also conspired to kidnap and murder Alabama civil rights attorney Morris Dees; the plot was foiled when it was revealed to authorities by a gang member turned informant Thomas Martinez, who would later author a book about his experiences with The Order called Brotherhood Of Murder (which was made into a film as well starring William Baldwin and Peter Gallagher). Robert Matthews was killed in a standoff with federal agents in Whitbey Island, Washington in 1984.
