The movie only covers the first half of the original novel by Michael Ende (Bastian reading the book and saving Fantasia for giving Childlike Empress a new name). Therefore, the point at which the movie ends is only the halfway point of the book (Bastian enters in Fantasia to recreate it using Auryn, his later coronation as King, a war to topple him, the progressive loss of memory after it and finally his return to the real world).
