Danny Glover was considered for the role of the General, which ultimately went to Morgan Freeman. Undoubtedly the producers were hoping to fend off charges of racism in locating the source of the viral outbreak in Africa and specifically in a kind of monkey (Capuchin) not even found in Africa.
