When Gene Roddenberry wrote the novel, the Enterprise was portrayed in this film as being above San Francisco in geo-stationary orbit at San Francisco Fleet Yards. When Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) was produced, the location had shifted to Mars at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards.
