Burt Lancaster mentions "Lady Astor's horse." This was an expression meaning someone who was ostentatiously dressed. It dates to the gilded age society hostess Caroline Astor, of the prominent New York family. She was known for throwing lavish parties, where even her horse was formally costumed.
