Melissa Benoist had originally auditioned for the part of Oliver's little sister, Thea Queen. In the end, though, she lost out to Willa Holland, who impressed the showrunners because she had a greater sense of duality, a sense of inner darkness behind her youthful exuberance. This was far more in keeping with the darker tone and style of the show. She ended up playing the title character in Supergirl (2015).
