According to Heather Donahue in the film, the trio are recording sounds in the format of the "Digital Audio Tape" (DAT). This format was developed by Sony and introduced in 1987. The format saw moderate success in professional markets and as a computer storage medium, but Sony discontinued production of its DAT machine models in 2005.
