William Hartnell believed the series was for children to enjoy more than anyone else and he rigidly stood by that opinion. Although he agreed to appear in the tenth anniversary special Doctor Who: The Three Doctors: Episode One (1972), he gave an interview to a newspaper during the early 1970s (when Jon Pertwee was playing the Doctor) and expressed his regret that he felt the series was no longer being made for children. He added that he hardly watched it anymore as a result.
