When in the car with Kenny, Bobby says that he hates being seen as the ruthless one. This is a reputation that he had earned. After following his brother's lead in support of the civil rights movement he softened greatly, which would have made his election to the Presidency in 1968 highly likely. Before this he was known for seeking a political path by supporting the McCarthy anti-communist witch hunts.
