The season three finale, Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Best of Both Worlds (1990), was largely connected with Patrick Stewart's contract negotiations. Stewart's contract for the series expired after the third season, and Stewart was giving serious consideration to not renewing it. Had Stewart not come to terms with producers on a new contract agreement, Picard would have been killed off in the season four opener, "The Best of Both Worlds: Part II".
