Melissa Rauch was collecting unemployment benefits and was scheduled to attend a seminar on how to get a job when she was invited to audition for the part of Bernadette. The role was described as something like "cute, sweet catholic scientist who goes on a date with Howard." She improvised the squeaky voice, reasoning that Bernadette was still living with her mother and was essentially still a "big child."
