High tech devices were always kept in the background and usually out of sight during the series. When the series began in 1990 technology was still very limited but even by series end in 2010 technology was always kept in the background. Many of the shots in the precinct still showed cops and detectives still using typewriters instead of computers or laptops, something as of 2020 many police departments still do, and many scenes still showed the District Attorney's using law books instead of laptops or tablets. This was in sharp contrast to shows like the CSI and NCIS franchises in which technology was always at the forefront.
