Wil Wheaton left the show towards the middle of the fourth season to pursue movie opportunities. Wesley was written out by being accepted into and departing for Starfleet Academy. Wheaton reprised his role as Wesley in sporadic guest appearances during the show's later seasons, as well as brief a cameo in Star Trek - La nemesi (2002) (most of which was relegated to the deleted scenes).
