Uncle Ugo was designed to be as scary and weird-looking as possible for a Disney film, so that Luca would dread the idea of having to go and live with him in the trench. Enrico Casarosa said that Uncle Ugo is based on the very strange creatures found in the deep; with his bio-luminescent lure, he resembles an Anglerfish like the one from Finding Nemo (2003), and the Barreleye another weird looking real life fish that has transparent flesh around it's upper half showing the insides of its body, similar to Uncle Ugo's.
