Although the books were originally published as a trilogy, the films were initially going to be made into two 'Lord of the Rings' films preceded by 'The Hobbit'. These plans changed after Sir Peter Jackson brought the project to New Line Cinema: the previous studio, Miramax, initially wanted the trilogy covered as a 'duology.'
