A prominent part of the film involves an oil embargo and its effect on the Southern California oil industry. On October 16, 1973, OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) embargoed oil to all the countries that supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War which had started 10 ten days earlier, which included the US and Netherlands and caused trouble to the oil and motor industry. Paul Thomas Anderson previously depicted the discovery of oil and the creation of the Southern California oil industry in his Academy Award winning film Il petroliere (2007).
