According to Denis Villeneuve, most of the main cast who featured were his top choices except for some of them. Zendaya was ultimately cast as Chani from the auditions after she was judged to have the best character chemistry with Timothée Chalamet. Chang Chen got the role of Dr. Yueh by chance after an encounter with Villeneuve at the 2018 Cannes film festival. Josh Brolin eventually got the part of Gurney after being suggested to meet Villeneuve by Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull while pitching a project of his own to the company.
