The character of Atticus was based on Amasa Coleman "A.C." Lee (1880 - 1962). The last name of Finch was the maiden name of Harper Lee's mother.Harper Lee, on who the character Scout was based, was born in 1926. If her life had paralleled that of Scout, her mother would have died in 1928, which was a year before the stock market crash that started the Great Depression. For Atticus this sequence of events would have been crushing, yet, like A.C. Lee, he always kept his spirits up. In actual life, Harper's mother, Frances Cunningham Finch, lived until 1951.Harper had a brother who, like Scout's brother Jem, was six years older than she. They also had two older sisters; Alice and Louise. Edwin joined the military and became a pilot, rising to the rank of major.
