While Khan and Carol Marcus are characters who previously appeared in Star Trek II - L'ira di Khan (1982), other plot elements mirror those found in Nicholas Meyer's second film, Rotta verso l'ignoto (1991). In both films, the major villain is played by an actor who has also played Sherlock Holmes and Hamlet. This character is secretly in league with a "Bad Admiral" from Starfleet (itself a common story element from Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)) helping him to conduct a war against the Klingons. Both films also feature Dr. McCoy and another character performing surgery on a torpedo.
