The only movie directed by Stanley Kubrick that has a sequel, until Doctor Sleep (2019), Stephen King's sequel to The Shining, came out in 2019. Both sequel films are based on sequel novels by the author of the first movie's source novel. However, Sir Arthur C. Clarke wrote his sequel novel to be more compatible with Kubrick's film rather than to his original novel, most notably by changing the destination planet of his sequel novel from Saturn (as it was in the first novel) to Jupiter (as it was in Kubrick's film). By contrast, when Stephen King wrote his sequel to "The Shining", he emphatically wrote it as a sequel to his original novel, creating discontinuities with Kubrick's film, most notably by keeping Dick Hallorann as a character, although Hallorann dies in Kubrick's film, but not in King's novel. This required extra work to make the film sequel compatible with Kubrick's film.
