Jack Nicholson was initially hesitant to take the role of the Joker after clashing with Jon Peters during the making of Le streghe di Eastwick (1987). During pre-production, Peters flew Nicholson to London to show him the set work and have a few nights on the town. The olive branch impressed Nicholson, and he promptly accepted the role.
