The film's press kit said of manic-depressive illness: ''Identified by Edinburgh psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin at the turn of the century, manic-depressive illness involves alternating periods of mania and mental depression. During their manic periods, manic-depressives may be extraordinarily productive . . . or destructively reckless. During their lows, they may take to their beds for weeks at a time or try to commit suicide. Mr. Jones suffers from this form of manic depression, though some patients experience less dramatic mood swings.''
