The American edit of the film ends with Sarah escaping from the cave and driving away, finally seeing Juno (most likely a hallucination) sitting in the car next to her. The UK version however has a much bleaker ending, continuing with a short scene where Sarah wakes up at the bottom of the cave: the escape was only a dream and she is hopelessly stuck inside the cave, with the creatures closing in on her. This finale was described as "uber-hopeless" by American screening audiences, and therefore omitted. The sequel The Descent: Part 2 (2009) starts with Sarah having just escaped from the cave, and is thus a follow-up to the American version of the film.
