A major theme of the movie is the duality of the human identity; how a person acts in front of others is often much different than who they truly are. Stanley is self-described as repressed and a hopeless romantic. When he becomes the Mask, he becomes a mischievous but still good-natured prankster and antihero. When Tina is first introduced, she seems like the typical femme fatale who is only out to use and ensnare Stanley. But as she gets to know Stanley/the Mask, she's reminded that there are still good people in the world and genuinely falls in love with him. At the start of the film, Dorian looks to be just a common criminal. However, as the film progresses, he becomes more desperate and violent, which is only solidified when he comes into possession of the mask. At first, Peggy appears to be a righteous journalist and law-abiding citizen. In the third act, however, she's revealed to be nothing more than greedy and out for number one.
