As seen in the prequel short film 2048: Nowhere to Run (2017), the events of this film are triggered by Sapper's kindness to a little girl. When the girl and her mother are mugged, Sapper is the only one to come to their aid. He kills the attackers and it becomes apparent from his strength and endurance that he is a Replicant. During the fray, he drops a receipt that reveals his address. An intelligence agent on the street finds this and calls it in, thereby kicking of the plot where agent K goes to retire Sapper, and learns about his participation in protecting a Replicant baby girl back in 2019. In a sense, Sapper's selfless intervention ensures another little girl's survival but becomes his own demise, repeating a theme where Replicants are "more human than human".
