References to Samuel Beckett's work appear frequently in Once A Thief. Murphy and Camier are named for Beckett's book Mercier et Camier for example, and a subplot in which they are both made to wait for a fellow assassin beside a tree and they contemplate hanging him is a parody of Beckett's play Waiting For Godot.
