The war-torn island of Corto Maltese is a fictional country that author Frank Miller first introduced in The Dark Knight #3 in August, 1986. It has since been referenced in numerous DC properties including Batman (1989), Smallville (2001), and Arrow (2012). The name is based on Italian series of adventure comics featuring the titular character, created by Hugo Pratt in 1967.
