In the early years of the show the initial plan for the end of the series was to have Lucas die by sacrificing himself for his family. Only as the show evolved throughout the years, creator Jonathan Tropper decided not to kill off his main character at the end of the series, because he realized that Lucas Hood had never really lived and that it was a more fitting send-off for his character to leave Banshee with the promise of finding himself on the road.
