Masaaki Tezuka, director of Gojira X Mekagojira (2002), remembers this as the first Godzilla film he saw as a child. He recalled that the theaters were overcrowded with people and that he had to wait in-line for 2 hours just to see the film. He described the characters like something out of a variety TV show, with their antics getting laughter from the audience. The monster battle was filled with awes, cheers, with Tezuka saying, "It was such an entertaining film. The house was packed, you know? We could barely get a seat."
