Some people accused Verhoeven of making a scene in which a girl seems to enjoy being raped, "of course nothing like that is the case." He points out that Agnes is acting that way to diminish her rapist's power and to give him the illusion of a bond between them. It's an act of survival, and it works as it leads to Martin preventing her from being raped by others as they initially intended.
